Nursery Vision: Reading the Ladybird Book Three Blind Mice

Dr Neil Cocks, Associate Professor in the Department of English Literature at Reading.

At first sight, the colourful illustrations to The Ladybird Book of Nursery Rhymes might seem simplistic and overly literal depictions of the accompanying verse. Taking Three Blind Mice as its starting point, this talk will argue instead that the relationship between language and picture in this text is complex, and engaging with it can help in thinking through wider challenges involved in the visual representation of vision.

Dr Neil Cocks is Associate Professor in the Department of English Literature at Reading. His wide-ranging research interests include children’s literature, visual culture, and psychoanalysis.

This series of  MERL Seminars: ‘Looking at Ladybird Books‘ is part of the events programme inspired by Ladybird Books: ‘How it Works’, a new exhibition hosted at Reading Museum as part of Museums Partnership Reading, a new cultural initiative funded by Arts Council England. The exhibition presents material from the extensive Ladybird Books Archive housed in the Special Collections at the University of Reading.
