Now recruiting

Our volunteer team is always evolving and growing, so why not get involved?

We are currently looking for volunteers to join us in the roles below. Apply using the form at the bottom of the page.

FRONT OF HOUSE MUSEUM & GALLERY VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers help our Front of House team provide an exceptional welcome. The role involves greeting museum visitors and researchers with a warm welcome, helping to maintain a high level of presentation in the welcome areas and in the galleries, and assisting with enquiries.

If volunteers wish to undertake further training, they may broaden their experience to deliver Object Handling sessions, facilitate pop-up displays related to changing exhibitions (e.g. enabling visitors to try augmented reality headsets), or lead Welcome Host introductions.

Hours:  Between 11am and 3pm, Tuesday to Sunday.
Flexible: volunteers will become part of a monthly rota, eg: every other Saturday, one Sunday a month, etc.

OBJECT HANDLING SESSION VOLUNTEER

If you have always wanted to get your hands on museum objects, why not go beyond the cases and become an object handling volunteer!

Volunteers attend two training sessions to understand how to help visitors handle museum objects correctly, and show them what they can learn about our objects by holding them and looking closely. We’re looking for enthusiastic people with an interest in our collections. You’ll need to be comfortable speaking to visitors and working alongside others.

Hours:  Sessions are offered to visitors between 1pm and 3pm from Tuesday to Sunday.
Flexible: volunteers become part of a monthly rota, e.g. every Weds, or alternate Sundays.

EVENTS VOLUNTEER

Volunteers support The MERL events in a variety of ways, from meeting, greeting and ticket checking of arriving visitors, through to supervising an activity. We are looking for volunteers who are comfortable with engaging with a friendly and generally non-specialist and diverse audience.

A museum’s work also goes beyond the building that houses its collection. We attend events in our local community to spread the word about the Museum and encourage people to visit. We’re looking for sociable, confident people who will enjoy chatting with event attendees about what’s on offer at the Museum and are happy getting out and about in the community to support museum staff at outreach events.

Hours: This role is very flexible and has no regular time commitment, although events are often held at weekends or evenings.

FRIDAY FLEDGLINGS –UNDER 5s OUTDOOR PLAY SESSIONS VOLUNTEER

Volunteers help at our popular outdoor toddler sessions ‘Friday Fledglings’. Sessions take their inspiration from the themes and collections of the museum, and focus on outdoor play and exploration of the natural environment. They involve story-telling, craft activities and singing. Friday Fledglings is led by Charlotte, a local teacher and Level 3 Forest Leader.

Tasks include setting up and tidying away activities, meeting and greeting families, helping with craft activities, and ensuring the smooth running of sessions.

Hours: 9:15am to 11:45am on Fridays in term time.

CODE CLUB FACILITATOR

The MERL would like to host a weekly Code Club, which is an initiative of the Raspberry Pi Foundation. Code Club is a nationwide network of volunteer-led after school clubs for young people aged 9-13 years old. Young people can learn programming languages such as Scratch and Python to create games, animations and websites, delivered in engaging and motivational sessions.

The MERL is looking for volunteers to deliver Code Club sessions in an interactive and fun way, assisting the young people to develop their creativity and curiosity through coding.

Volunteers help and guide the young people through the coding exercises, ‘Code Club projects’ which are step-by-step guides for the young people to follow – all resources are provided on the Code Club website.

The role would suit those who are confident in working with young people or are keen to develop their skills in this area.

Hours: 3:30pm to 5pm on a weekday (day TBC) in line with local school terms
