Patterson, Gordon (Landscape Architect)
Gordon Patterson (1928-2021) started his career as a Landscape Architect working for Westminster City Council. He became a full member of the Landscape Institute in 1953, and the following year he would begin a role working for Stevenage New Town. He worked on many significant projects in this role, most notably Lister Hospital.
In 1962 Patterson set up a private practice, first in partnership and then on his own, and remained in practice until 1992.
Other key positions held by Patterson include Landscape Consultant to the Forestry Commission (1982-1998) and to Churchill College, Cambridge (1992-1998), as well as a teaching at the Cheltenham School of Architecture & Landscape between 1960 and 1965. Major architectural projects Patterson has contributed to include the Whiteknights Campus in Reading and the Leicester Crown Courts. He has also contributed to several books, such as Landscape Design with Plants (1972).
This collection contains papers from his private practice, his work for the Forestry Commission, and from his role as an Examiner and as Editor for ‘Landscape Design’.
