A Break from Tradition

About this event

The late 19th and early 20th centuries were a transformative period in Europe. Developments in industry, technology and transportation altered life beyond recognition.

It was against this backdrop of unprecedented social, economic and political change that a new generation of artists began to challenge traditional artistic practices. These artists would eventually create what we now refer to as ‘modern art’.

This exhibition explores the artworks created during this period.

‘A Break from Tradition’ is available to view on the first floor of the Staircase Hall within The MERL opening hours:

Tuesday to Friday, 9am to 5pm

Saturday and Sunday, 10am to 5pm

Closed on Mondays (including Bank Holidays)
