The Long Road: Robert Dawson Romany Collection Learning Resource
Summary
A resource written by Gypsy, Roma and Traveller poet Dr Jo Clement to increase knowledge and understanding about Gypsy, Roma and Traveller cultures through our Robert Dawson Romany Collection. The resource supports educators in particular to draw on our permanent exhibition ‘The Long Road’ within Making Rural England, which has objects selected by Jo and local G,R and T school students.

- Support inclusive curriculum design, encourage meaningful dialogue and embrace celebrations of diversity
- Support SMSC – personal growth and cultural awareness to explore diverse cultures, incorporating art and literature
- Changes within living memory
- Local history study
- A study of an aspect of social history, such as the impact through time of the migration of people to, from and within the British Isles
- Human geography, types of settlement and land use and use of natural resources
- Art and Design: learning about the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own work.

This activity could also be used in conjunction with our ‘What industries have put Reading on the map?’ resource, which includes the Dunton & Sons ‘Reading Waggon’.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this set of activities students will:
- Have increased knowledge of living Gypsy, Roma and Traveller histories and cultures in the UK
- Be able to empathetically describe and explain mobile living in rural environments, as well as care for elders
- Develop skills in reading, imaginative writing and interpreting information
