Whiteknights Studio Trail at The MERL
About this event
The work of over 35 artists will be displayed across many venues around the Whiteknights campus area. The MERL is delighted to be hosting two artists this year: Mark Ripley and Manuela Kagerbauer. Visitors are invited to stroll around, enjoy the art, and see the artists’ work and processes. Don’t forget to enjoy some tea and cake in the MERL café and visit the museum too!
Mark Ripley
I have been a full-time furniture designer-maker since the early 1990’s having trained at Leicester Polytechnic where I gained a BA Hons Degree in three dimensional design. While mostly working to commission, work is usually also available for sale from my studio and at the Whiteknights Studio Trail. Arts and Crafts and Scandinavian influenced designs hand made in sustainably sourced solid hardwoods. I specialize in chairs, including my signature rocking chairs which remain a firm favourite.

Manuela Kagerbauer
I create visually stimulating and immersive installations and smaller objects using mixed media, with a focus on technical materials, often incorporating glass and metal. Through my work, I express my interest in representing the early symptoms of Macular Degeneration, a visual impairment. People with this sight deficiency can experience warped lines and movement, like an optical illusion. I use this as inspiration for my work, playing with recreating symptoms.
I love the mouldability of metal and the fragility of glass. I enjoy exploring the possibilities of both materials, pushing the boundaries of what is technically achievable. The interaction between the viewer and the object is very important to me. I want my work to be an experience!
