Live music – Cocktails by Milk Reading – Silent Disco

This Late explores the non-human countryside, showcasing research and creative practice from the University of Reading and beyond. Join us for an evening of weather, wildlife, livestock, machinery, plants, and much more. Avoid people at our silent disco. Buy an inhumanly tasty cocktail from our pop-up bar. Visit Sire, Maria McKinney’s absolute unit of an art intervention. Come along and help us make the unpopular popular.

Programme

  • Enjoy live music: Journey through an upbeat, fun and sincere collage of trans-European roots music from the band Scratchy Beard. Gypsy, Jazzy, Rootsy Folk!
  • Have a drink: Delicious cocktails and mocktails from Milk Reading
  • Quietly boogie at our More than Human silent disco
  • SCIENCE SHOWOFF! – Join some of the UK’s funniest science researchers for jokes and tales from behind the microscopes, inside the labs and underneath the piles of admin paperwork. We guarantee laughter, learning, and more silliness than you think would be allowed in a University museum
  • Domesticate, Hunt or Worship: Learn about the ancient Greeks’ attitude to nature at this Ure Museum handling activity
  • FIELD’s farming busk: learn about the difficult choices farmers have to make when managing disease, through this interactive game
  • Blight Attack buzzer game: learn how our ancestors have fought off pests in the past
  • Super Insects! Design and build an insect to suit different environments
  • Carve / Print / Record: respond to tree data and make your own stamps and prints with artist, Rachel Barbaresi
  • Decorate Malted Milk biscuits – inspired by Maria McKinney’s Sire exhibition
  • Strawcraft structures for garden wildlife: Be inspired by the MERL’s strawcraft collections and the Sire. exhibition to craft your own useful bird feeder for the garden. Weave with willow or straw to create a structure for a fat ball or to provide nesting materials for birds
  • Planting Peas: sow heirloom pea varieties ‘Glory of Devon’ and the ‘Tall Telephone’ and have a go at growing your own
  • ‘Managing Unhealthy Beasts’: enjoy gallery tours from the Animal History Group
  • Microscopes, molluscs and monsters: a pop up display of the Cole Library and Archives of early medicine and zoology
  • Crafting Taxidermy: Celebrate taxidermy through arts and crafts – create a 3D pocket reindeer, design a diorama, colour a study skin and create a badge to take away and wear
  • Complete the More then Human gallery trail and win a MERL shop voucher
  • Get hand’s on with the MERL’s object collections
