Growing and Green Health
COMMUNITY GROWING SPACES
There are five new community growing spaces run by local groups, currently including:
- Reading Mencap
- Berkshire Young People with Dementia
- our gardening volunteers
- the Friday Fledglings toddler group
Community groups are growing food together, inspired by our collections.
HERITAGE CROPS
We have two experimental crop areas.
In the first plot we are growing heritage crops based on the Norfolk rotation system. These include cereals, clover, legumes and root crops.
In the second, we are working with the Greater Reading Nepalese Community Association to grow a variety of crops ranging from potatoes to ‘Elephant Ears’.
SHEPHERD’S HUT
The sensory Shepherd’s Hut, donated by the Friends of the University of Reading, is filled with knitted toys and decorations made by our group of volunteers, The Mewes Knittters.
THE HERB GARDEN
Our herb garden has a large variety of herbs, fruit trees and plants.
We encourage our visitors to visit and enjoy the garden. Visitors are welcome to bring a picnic and relax in our peaceful, safe and beautiful environment.
