Name that beer!

Enter our competition to name a new beer for the MERL Village Fete!

You may remember Adam’s recent post on brewing, in which he mentioned the beer tent at the MERL Village Fete, taking place on May 31st. We have had a beer tent at the Fete for a few years now, with a selection of beers from a couple of local breweries, including the West Berkshire Brewery and Binghams Brewery, (and cider from Tutts Clump).

We were looking to increase the choice of beers on offer this year, and approached the Sherfield Village Brewery, who recently collaborated with the University of Reading Real Ale Society to create Extra-Curricular ale to serve in the University bars. This popular brew has sold out, so Sherfield agreed to create a new beer specially for our event. The new ‘light, hoppy, summer beer’ now needs a name!

So, we are inviting you to come up with a name for the new beer, which relates in some way to MERL, our collections or the Village Fete! You can enter our competition by posting your suggested names below, via Twitter (@MERLReading #MERLfete) or on our Facebook page or by emailing merlevents@reading.ac.uk  by 9am on Thursday 29th May. We’ll pick our favourite and the winner will receive a pair of tickets to the Fete and a free pint – of  course!

We look forward to hearing your suggestions!

    1. Thanks for your suggestions! I’ll enter them into the competition. As you may know we currently have an application in to the Heritage Lottery Fund for a major redevelopment of the Museum. We hope to be able to make changes in the garden too, including using more of the space for growing crops and for allotments, so maybe we could think about hops! Please get in touch if you’d like to know more about the project. Thanks, Alison

  1. The obvious one is Merlin (MERLin), but I think that’s taken. Other ideas:
    – Redlands
    – Steam Plough
    – Trooper Potts
    – King’s Meadow

    1. Thanks, Mark! I’ve added your suggestions to the list. We’ve decided to call the beer tent the ‘MERL-inn’ this year (after the small bird of prey rather than the wizard!)
