Woods, Katharine S., Photographic Collection

Katharine Seymour Woods (1887-1980) was an author and teacher. She studied at the University of Oxford during World War I, starting about 1915 or 1916. In 1921, she published her first book on rural life titled The rural industries round Oxford; a survey made on behalf of the Institute for Research in Agricultural Economics, University of Oxford. She was also the author of several other books and pamphlets on rural crafts and industries in Britain, such as Rural crafts of England: a study of skilled workmanship (1949) and Traditional English forestry – problems of survival (1973).

Woods started the Hudson House Garden School in her own home just after World War I. In 1928, she built a school house in her extensive back garden to accommodate the growing number of students. Katherine retired from teaching in 1943. The school still exists today.

This collection consists of about 100 prints and a few negatives showing crafts and industries, and collected from various sources including Eric Guy and Cecil Snow.
